The Saito Chess module supports the standard two player game that is sometimes called international chess or Western chess to distinguish it from related games, such as xiangqi (Chinese chess) and shogi (Japanese chess). This is the form of the game that emerged in Spain and the rest of Southern Europe during the 2nd half of the 15th century. The game is now one of the most popular games, played by millions worldwide.
Chess was the first game module ever coded for the Saito Network, primarily as a demonstration that it is possible to use cryptographically-signed peer-to-peer messages to play the game reliably in a trustless setting. In the years since Saito launched the game originally, its graphics have improved along with the other applications on the network, but the heart of the game remains the same.
While there are many places for players to play chess, the Saito module by now supports a number of additional features that are not available elsewhere. Players can chat and make videocalls during their games, as well as to broadcast their matches via a P2P swarmcast or through Youtube. Observer mode allows other players to track game moves in real-time. And it is also possible for players β law permitting β to wager cryptocurrencies as part of their matches.
